Pyramid Selling
Recruiting for participants to work in a multiple level marketing plan that involves a Scheme of Pyramid Selling
A scheme of pyramid selling is a multi-level marketing plan that incorporates any one of a number of specified marketing practices that make it a criminal offence under the Competition Act. It is illegal if:
- participants (Seneca students, graduates or alumni) pay money for the right to receive compensation for recruiting new participants;
- a participant (Seneca student, graduate or alumni) is required to buy a specific quantity of products, other than at cost price for the purpose of advertising, before the participant (Seneca student, graduate or alumni) is allowed to join the plan or advance within the plan;
- participants (Seneca students, graduate or alumni) are knowingly sold commercially unreasonable quantities of the product or products (this practice is called inventory loading); or
- Participants (student, grad or alumni) are not allowed to return products on reasonable commercial terms.
Multiple Level Marketing Organizations
Multiple-level marketing plans, as defined in the Competition Act, are legal.
It is required by law (Competition Act) that Multiple Level Organizations must include the amount of compensation actually or likely to be received by a potential participant (Seneca student, graduate or alumni) of the plan, so as not to mislead potential recruits (Seneca student, graduate or alumni) to believe that it will be easy to make large amounts of money.
A Multiple Level Plan type Organization should ensure that any representations made about the plan are — or include information that is — fair, reasonable and timely as the plan relates to:
- the different levels of earnings or compensation received by participants in the plan;
- the amount of money earned by a typical participant; and
- The time and effort required to reach specific levels of income.
Third Party Recruiters
Third party recruiters are required to submit to Career Services (on their company letterhead) their recruiting intent and identify the client/organization they are representing. Resumes obtained during campus recruiting, cannot be shared with other third party recruiters or their clients. Career Services will not extend services under any circumstances if a fee of any kind is charged to students or alumni.
Job Fair Etiquette
Employers participating at a job fair will solicit Seneca students and graduates from the space allotted to them at their booth and refrain from walking around the campus or job fair location to recruit students
During on-campus career services events, employers are expected to conduct themselves in an ethical and professional manner, and treat other job fair participants with professionalism and respect.
Comments with regards to employer, staff or student misconduct should be brought to the attention of a Seneca Career Coordinator.
